Notes from the Desk of Our Chair

Don't Miss Renewing Your Background Check: The required Background Screens for officials are good for two years. That means that the Background Screens for some are expiring. You will receive email reminder 30-days before your screen expires. Be aware, however, that though it may come from "coaching@usatf.org" and may be addressed to "Coach" it still applies to officials. If your Background Screen expires, your certification becomes invalid and it may cause you to be ineligible to apply for the 2018 championship meets. If you have questions about when your Background Screen is set to expire, contact your Association Certification Chair.

USATF National Championship Applications: Later this month, applications for the 2018 USATF Junior and Senior Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field championship meets will be emailed to National and Master level officials. Please make sure your certification is current - including your Background Screen. If you have any questions, let us know.

Annual Meeting Schedule: Here is a list of the N.O.C. meetings and events at the 2017 USATF Annual Meeting.

Meet Applications: The page on our website for meets needing officials is active again (or will be soon). If you have championship meets that need officials or are looking for meets to work, check the "Applications" link.

NCAA Officials Assignor: Nathan Smurdon has been named NCAA Men’s and Women’s Track and Field National Officials Assignor. He will work with the eight meets that comprise the Division I, II and III NCAA Track & Field Championships each season. For officiating questions or information on the NCAA championships officials’ application process, please feel free to contact Nathan at ncaaofficials@gmail.com.

You can contact Mike Armstrong via email at USATF.Officials.Chair@gmail.com.

N.O.C. to Sponsor Young Official Travel Grants in 2018

The National Officials Committee remains concerned about the number of young officials who are not able to travel to officiate USATF national championship meets. The Committee recognizes the financial commitment each official makes in order to travel to and officiate these national level meets. The Committee has investigated a number of options designed to assist young officials with financial assistance in order to obtain the experience necessary to become effective officials at national level meets. Continue reading . . .

2017 N.O.C. Special Election

This year the National Officials Committee shall hold a special election for the Vice Chair of Certification, whose term of office shall be one year.

In accordance with the National Officials Committee operating procedures, below you will find a link to the official letter and application form. As stated, any candidate submission by membership should be forwarded to Valaree Langley-Foss or Lillian Mahoney so that a listing can be compiled. We would like each voting member to receive advance notification of the running candidate prior to the annual meeting being held in Columbus, Ohio; although nominations will be accepted at the floor during the convention. Once all nominations have been received, a listing of nominated candidates will be forwarded to the voting membership shortly after October 16th, and listed in the next official’s newsletter.

To the USATF Officials,

It is with great pleasure that I announce the 2017 officials who have been selected for induction into the National Officials Hall of Fame. Clarification of USATF Rule 180.11(c)
This was addressed in the April Newsletter. Since then, there seems to be two interpretations even Internationally.

  1. The consecutive time is applicable only for attempts within a round.
  2. Consecutive attempts rule should apply both within a round and between rounds.

We are now hearing consecutive trials are applicable both within a round and between rounds. We will get final clarification when the ITOs meet in London this October or sooner. Any questions feel free to contact Laurie Boemker, 401-286-9281.

World Para Athletics

Rule 7.18 (Guidelines for Jumping Events in Class T11)
Athletes in class T-11 may have 2 guides in the High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump. One guide assists by orienting the athlete at the start of the approach before each attempt. The other guide gives the athlete acoustic orientation during the approach.

Did You Know?

You can convert hurdle inches to meters with this simple formula: meters = inches x 0.0254 For example, 36 inches x 0.0254 = 0.9144 (.914 m)

Good Luck Lindsay

USATF and in particular the National Officials Committee is losing a major asset in the departure of Lindsay Toussant from the USATF Events. For those of us that have worked a National meet, be it the Junior/Senior Outdoors, Masters or a LDR event has been assisted by Lindsay.

After four years at USATF, Lindsay is off to a new adventure as the Director of Events with the Omaha Sports Commission. Thank you Lindsay for all that you have done and Good Luck.
