USATF Masters 5km Championships

The 2017 USATF Masters 5 km Cross Country Championships were held on Sunday, October 15. Over 330 Masters athletes contested the hills and wooded trails of storied Franklin Park in Boston. A strong contingent of New England runners welcomed their rivals from across the country and produced winners in each of the contested championship races - Women, Men 60+ and Men 40+. Ginger Reiner of Craft Concept Racing out of Lincoln, MA, John Barbour from the Greater Lowell Track Club, and Aaron Price from the Boston Athletic Association were the respective winners in 18:45, 18:30, and 16:15, respectively.

Ten-time Masters Harrier of the Year Kathy Martin took the women's age grade with 93.53% and Nat Larson won the men's contest with 90.57%. Only one club from outside New England claimed a men's title while all three of the women's were won by teams from other regions.

Teams from the BAA, Greater Springfield Harriers, and the New England 65+ Runners Clubs claimed the first prize awards in Men's 40+, 50+ and 70+ respectively, while Shore AC of New Jersey brought the Men's 60+ trophy home with them. In the women's races, it was familiar faces as New York's Genesee Valley Harriers, Southeastern Pennsylvania's Athena Track Club and the Impala Racing out of the San Francisco Bay area walked off with the 40+, 50+ and 60+ top prizes.

USATF Masters 15 km Championships

On Saturday, October 28, the USATF Masters 15 km Championships were held in conjunction with the Tulsa Federal Credit Union Tulsa Run. This was the 40th running of the event and all of our Championship runners received commemorative 40th anniversary medals. The runners set off with hats and gloves in 27-degree wind-chill weather.

Despite the cold and the wind, Kevin Castille was able to dominate the men's overall race, winning in a remarkable 46:36 on the challenging, hilly course. Fiona Bayly took the women's race in 58:46. Sabra Harvey kept the strong age division field at bay in the 65-69 division, winning in 1:07:24. She also earned the highest age-grading score, symbolic of the best relative performance across all age groups, of 98.69%, topping even Castille's already remarkable 94.30%. The top 3 runners in Harvey's division all scored above 95.0%. Age Division and Team National Champions were crowned as well..

National Club Cross Country Championships

The final event of the 2017 Masters Grand Prix is the National Club Cross Country Championships in Lexington, KY, on Saturday, December 9. This is typically the largest gathering of Masters Athletes on the Grand Prix circuit. This event will count for the 2017 Masters Grand Prix and also for the 2017-18 Masters Grand Prix. The Masters LDR Executive Committee has determined that the schedule be changed from the calendar year to a schedule running from November 1 of a given year until October 31 of the following year. This will allow the Grand Prix Standings to be compiled early enough so that Awards and Championship Banners can be presented to the winners during the National Club Cross Country Championships each year.
