2017 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships

The USATF National Club Cross Country Championships were held on Sunday, December 9. Over 550 Masters runners entered to contest for national titles; the event is typically the biggest on our Masters Grand Prix circuit. The wind and cold were challenging, with a 14-degree wind chill when the Masters Men 60+ 8K race went off at 9:00 a.m. Joe Sheeran from Club NW went right to the front and was never challenged, winning by 1:03 in 29:29. Rick Becker, his teammate, came in second along with Ken Youngers from Atlanta Track Club in third.

The Women's 6K race was tighter through the first loop, but Strava's Kris Paaso made a decisive move with a kilometer to go and finished in 22:04, with Margaret Brennan a dozen seconds back and Atlanta's Sonja Friend-Uhl in third.

With a kilometer to go in the Men's 40-59 race, Neville Davey, of the West Valley Track Club, threw in a surge that no one could match and it carried him all the way to the finish line and a 19-second victory in 32:43. Bowerman's John Howell took second as Davey's teammate, Jorge Maravilla held off a fast-closing David Angell for third place. Team honors went to the Atlanta Track Club.

Winners of the club titles were: Atlanta Track Club in Women's 40+, the Jane's Elite Racing in Women's 50+, and Team Red Lizard in Women's 70+. In the Men's races, West Valley Track Clubtook the 40+, Greater Springfield Harriers in 50+, Club Northwest in 60+ and the Tamalpa Runnersin 70+. Age-grading honors went to 2017 Masters Athlete of the Year Sabra Harvey in the Women's race, Joe Sheeran in the Men's 60+ race, and Nat Larson in Men's 40-59.

Team USATF Hotel in Malaga for WMA Championships in September 2018

A block of rooms is reserved for Team USATF in the Hilton Garden Inn in Malaga, Spain for the 2018 WMA Championships in September. The rate at the Hilton Garden in is 63.50 euros per person per night in twin and double rooms; 117 euros per night for a single; and 56 euros per person per night in a triple room.
The Hilton Garden Inn is located within walking distance of the principal stadium for the Championships and is a four-star hotel adjacent to a Metro station. It has an outdoor swimming pool, restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine, and free wi-fi.
Click here for a link to the special Team USATF Accommodation Form that must be used to be part of the room block, which includes special payment and cancellation policies that are better than those for reservations made directly on the Malaga 2018 Accommodation website. For example, we negotiated a 25% initial deposit for the Team USATF block of rooms rather than the 50% deposit required of others.
