Notes from the Desk of Our Chair

USATF National Championship Applications: The application for the 2018 USATF Junior and Senior Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championship meets have been emailed to all National and Master level officials. If you did not receive that email, let me know. The application deadline is Oct. 15. At this time, USATF has not announced decisions on the locations for the Junior and Senior Outdoor Championship meets. They will be separate meets and the dates are set. I would encourage you to apply even without this information so that you don't miss out on the opportunity to work these meets.

National Officials Shirt: As of October 6, there were 4,490 certified officials in the US. However, 709 of those have not entered their shirt size into their USATF Membership Profile and, therefore, have not received their national shirt. If you haven't received your shirt, check your profile to make sure you have a size entered. If you need help, contact your Association Certification Chair.

Annual Meeting Schedule: Here is a list of the N.O.C. meetings and events at the 2017 USATF Annual Meeting.

Officials’ Meet Applications

At long last we’ve got the page back up for officials’ applications for major events - collegiate conference championships, and regional & national championships. Please go to this link to view applications for meets needing officials. And, from the same page, Meet Directors and Officials Coordinators may submit their request for an officials’ championship application to be posted to the site. Our thanks to the USATF National Office for restoring this feature.

USATF Rule of the Month

Cross Country & MUT Start - USATF Rule 252.1

Cross country and mountain running races shall be started by the firing of a pistol or other suitable device. The commands for races longer than 400m should be used. See Rule 162.8. However, where a race will be started using a different procedure, such procedure should be clearly conveyed to all competitors either in writing or by public address announcement. A race may be recalled upon a false start or a fall which impacts the field within the first 100m.

Did You Know?

The AAU track and field rule book in 1907 was all of 14 pages long, plus three pages covering cross country. And, according to the rule book, the number of officials needed to put on a meet was about 17, plus maybe some assistants.
