USATF News - December 2019
Dear USATF Family,
I hope that you all had smooth and uneventful travels from the Annual Meeting and that your time in Reno was productive and impactful. Whether you served on one or more of the many diverse committees, led a committee, or participated in the discussions, I want to thank you for your time, energy, and commitment to our sport. All of our constituent groups, Youth, Masters, Officials, Coaches, Track & Field, Race Walking and LDR committees, and elite Athletes, must continue to work together to define and advance our agenda every day. Each of you holds the future of our sport in your hands. Our collective efforts are what allows us to serve our athletes better and move our sport forward as we look to the future.
At the Annual Meeting, I witnessed a tremendous amount of decisive action by all of our constituent groups. Under the leadership of Judge Jim Murphy, the Law & Legislation Committee worked diligently throughout the extended weekend to review and recommend several needed bylaws revisions. The Youth Executive Committee worked each day from dawn until dusk to continue to provide programs that keep young people engaged in our sport and with USATF. Our Masters' committees continue to benefit from the hard work from some very talented leaders. As expected, it will be another busy year for the Long Distance Running division as they continue to expand and grow. I had several conversations with the leadership of the AAC regarding the needs of our outstanding athletes. Jeff Porter and I will continue that dialogue in the new year. Thank you to our exceptional coaches for guiding our talented athletes to even higher levels. We, as an organization, stand committed to providing a safe environment for our children to enjoy our multi-faceted sport for walkers, jumpers, sprinters, hurdlers, throwers, and distance runners.
Congratulations to the Officials honored at the annual banquet while our Hall of Fame inductees were very impressive. Please join me in recognizing Sandra Farmer Patrick, Steve Lewis, John Powell, and the late Fred Thompson as our newest honorees. We celebrated the best athletes on the planet at the Night of Legends. And our Opening and Closing sessions went smoothly, thanks to the work of the national office staff.
Finally, I pledge my best effort to serve our Members every day in my role as President of your federation. Year after year, I am amazed at how much progress we have made because of the professionalism of our coaches, the commitment from our athletes, the services provided by our volunteers, and the excitement our fans bring to every competition. As we closeout 2019, I look forward to working closely with Max Siegel and my colleagues on the Board of Directors as we prepare for a challenging Olympic year and an exciting decade ahead.
Have a wonderful holiday and thank you again for your incredible work on behalf of the greatest sport in the world.
Best regards,
