Ross Third at USATF Championships in Oregon; Earns Team USA Spot for World Championships
North Carolina Results Scoreboard
(28-Jun) Twenty-four USATF North Carolina members competed in the
2022 USATF Outdoor Championships
that concluded on Sunday )26-Jun) in Eugene, Oregon. The championships were the qualifying event for next month's
World Athletics Championships
to also be held in Eugene. The top three athletes in each event who have also met the world championship entry standards earned Team USA spots to compete in Eugene next month.
Randolph Ross
(Burlington, NC; North Carolina A&T State Univ.) came to Eugene with the #2 entry mark with many experts including his name as a favorite to earn one of the three coveted Team USA spots. He did not disappoint as he ran to a third place finish running 44.17; the third fastest 400m in his career. The race was won by Michael Norman (43.56) with NCAA runner-up Champion Allison placing second (43.70).
In the women's 200m two North Carolina members earned spots in the finals.
Cambrea Sturgis
(Kannapolis, NC; adidas) ran a personal best of 22.11 in the semi-finals and then went on to finish fourth in the finals running 22.16.
Kayla White
(Greensboro, NC; Nike) finished seventh in the finals running 22.39 after running a personal best of 22.18 in the semi-finals. Both also competed in the 100m with White finishing 10th (10.99) and Sturgis 14th (11.04).
Similar to the 200m, two North Carolinas advanced to the finals in the 100m Hurdles.
Paula Salmon
(Greensboro; North Carolina A&T State Univ.) finished sixth running 12.78 and
Gabriele Cunningham
(Holly Springs) finished seventh stopping the clock at 13.00. In the first round heats and semi-finals Salmon turned in identical times of 12.76 and likewise Cunningham clocked 12.73 in each of the two qualifying rounds.
In the women's Discus Throw
Veronica Fraley
(Clemson, SC; Vanderbilt Univ.) finished fourth with a mark of 59.90m (196-6). It was her second best throw in her career (personal best 63.00m).
In the 5000m
Fiona O’Keeffe
(Chapel Hill; Puma) finished sixth in a tactical race running 15:58.86. She covered the last 1600m in 4:35.21.
Cravont Charleston
(Charlotte; Tracksmith) finished 11th in the 100m (10.05) and 12th in the 200m (20.50).
In the 110m Hurdles,
Josh Brockman
(Raleigh; North Carolina State) finished 13th in a personal best time of 13.55. His previous best was 13.60 run at the NCAA regionals in May.
